Islandora is an open source ecosystem which combines the Drupal CMS, the Fedora repository system and a host of other applications to create a rich and flexible system for managing any digital asset collection. Islandora was developed at the University of PEI and is used to steward assets ranging from digital library collections to complex research data. The software is being used at organizations across the world from a wide range of domains. DiscoveryGarden is a commercial spin-off from UPEI that provides a full range of services for the Islandora system. This session will provide an overview of the system as well as some of the opportunities and challenges in building and nurturing an open source framework.
Mark Leggott is the University Librarian at the University of PEI and President/CEO of DiscoveryGarden. While at UPEI Mark has been involved with a number of open source and open data projects: Islandora (Mark's 3rd open source project); Knowledge for All (a project to create a free and open repository of academic research); the UPEI Virtual Research Environment (a system that facilitates the development of an open data environment for research data in any domain). Mark is a strong proponent of all things open and is committed to building a strong and sustainable open source ecosystem.
