Cecile Klein, Business Development Officer, Canadian Intellectual Property Office (CIPO) (www.cipo.ic.gc.ca) - Joining CIPO in 1996, Cecile provides information on all areas of intellectual property - patents, trademarks, copyrights, industrial designs and integrated circuit topographies, and their related treaties and conventions. She also promotes CIPO's various free resources, such as the Bank of Speakers initiative and the university and community college Intellectual Property Case Studies. Cecile is based at the CIPO Atlantic office, which responds to inquiries from throughout the region.
Trevor Newton, Patent Agent, Gowlings (www.gowlings.com) - Trevor is a patent agent registered in Canada and the United States. His practice focuses on patent drafting, prosecution and patent portfolio management, with emphasis on biotechnology, pharmaceuticals, diagnostics, and medical devices. Before joining Gowlings, Trevor worked for several years as a researcher in the field of drug discovery with a large international pharmaceutical company in Boston, and in vaccine development with the National Research Council in Ottawa. During this time, he gained research experience in biochemistry, molecular biology, biology, immunology and organic chemistry, with a concentration in protein chemistry, enzymology and drug development.
Robert (Bob) Ford, Partner, Gowlings (www.gowlings.com ) - Bob is a partner in Gowlings' business law department, working from the Gowlings Kanata Technology Law Office, which specializes in serving technology and life sciences companies and the investors that fund them. Bob provides advice to senior and emerging technology and biotechnology companies, investment banks, and private equity and venture capital investors, on domestic and cross border equity and debt financings, mergers and acquisitions, technology/life sciences licensing transactions and corporate reorganizations. He has advised clients in a variety of commercial sectors, including medical devices, semi-conductor, networking systems, hardware, software, web-based and e-business.
Nicholas Whalen, Associate, McInnes Cooper (www.mcinnescooper.com ) - Nick practices primarily in corporate and business law, with a focus on intellectual property and technology law. Prior to returning to McInnes Cooper, Nick was an associate in the corporate mergers and acquisitions and technology law groups of a top tier Canadian law firm. Nick also worked at a boutique intellectual property and technology law firm in Toronto, from which he was seconded for over a year to a major telecommunications company. Nick is a registered patent agent, and has experience drafting and prosecuting originating patent applications for electrical, mechanical and software related inventions.
