Meet Our Panelists:

Nick Miesener,  Partner at Venor


Nick brings almost a decade of recruitment and human resources experience to the table having worked with venture capital-backed start-ups through to Fortune 100 companies to solve their unique talent challenges. Nick truly believes in the importance of finding and recognizing high-character, high-talent individuals, and putting them in a position to succeed. From blockchain technology through to ocean sensors, Nick has developed a reputation for partnering with businesses and top talent to understand their needs and find the best possible match. Nick holds a BA from Saint Mary’s University and an Advanced Diploma in HR from NSCC. He is also a Certified Human Resources Professional (CHRP) candidate, having successfully passed the National Knowledge Exam.




Dr. Andrew Rau-Chaplin,

Professor and Dean in the Faculty of Computer Science 

Dalhousie University

Dr. Rau-Chaplin received an M.C.S. and Ph.D. from Carleton University and was a Postdoctoral Fellow at DIMACS - a National Science Foundation center run by Princeton University, Rutgers, and AT&T Bell labs. His recent industrial research has focused on catastrophe modeling, portfolio risk management, and dynamic financial analysis, by drawing on a diverse set of technologies including stochastic simulation, high performance computing, optimization, spatial OLAP, and data warehousing. 

Together with his research group, he has authored over 100 scientific papers on the application of parallel computing to data and computationally intensive problems. Within Dalhousie he has been a member of the Physical planning committee, NSERC doctoral awards committee, and a number of Decanal search and review committees. Nationally, he chaired NSERC Discovery Grant Selection Committee 331, and has been a member of awards panels for a variety of NSERC, CFI, and Compute Canada programs. Internationally, he has served on over 70 conference program committees and is currently an Associate Editor of the highly regarded Journal of Parallel and Distributed Computing.

His M.Sc. and Ph.D. students have gone on to positions in academia and leading technology companies including Google, Microsoft, and Intel. He is passionate about developing the best talent pipeline possible for Atlantic Canada’s digital sector. Dalhousie has been central to Dr. Rau-Chaplin’s professional and personal life and he is committed to working with his colleagues to help the Faculty reach its full potential.
